What do IP65 / IP67 ratings mean?

Glossary Updated

The first IP digit is dust protection (6 = dust-tight), the second is water (5 = jets, 7 = temporary immersion). Choose at least IP65 outdoors or where washdown occurs, IP67+ where flooding is possible.

An IP rating has two digits: the first (0-6) for solids/dust, the second (0-9) for water. IP65 means dust-tight plus jet-proof - covering most outdoor and washdown scenarios; IP67 adds temporary immersion, common for AGV underside sensors and outdoor junction boxes.

Note the rating tests the enclosure itself: an untightened connector or wrong cable gland voids it in practice. Telling the engineer the mounting orientation and cable routing is worth more than the number alone.
